Sheila Ohstrom, Founder and Owner of Senior Home Care Solutions/Alzheimer's Solutions
Sheila Ohstrom
Sheila Ohstrom, Founder and Owner of Senior Home Care & Alzheimer's Solutions, is a certified trainer and coach in the Positive Approach® to Care program, developed by Teepa Snow.

Sheila opened Senior Home Care & Alzheimer's Solutions in 2010 after having her own experiences with friends and family needing care. These experiences gave her the desire to find qualified people to help keep loved ones in their own homes for as long as possible.

Sheila is a graduate of Alfred University (’91) and has a wide variety of experience in various industries that makes her a truly unique provider.

She is involved in the Fayetteville Senior Center, Manlius Senior Center, Fayetteville-Manlius Chambers and WBOC (Women Business Opportunities Connection). She has experience teaching, care-giving, fundraising and is involved in her church.

 

 

Meet Our Team of Caring Professionals

We are proud of each member of our team. All our caregivers are specially trained in the Positive Approach® to Care techniques, giving them insight into the best ways to help people with dementia.  They are all bonded, insured and background-checked.  Most importantly, they have passion for the people we serve!

Bernadette

PAC Trainer, Sales and Marketing

Bernadette joined Senior Home Care Solutions in 2012. She is a Dementia Care Training Specialist, schooled under Teepa Snow, the world’s renowned leading advocate in dementia care and the creator of the Positive Approach to Care™.

Bernadette worked as an underwriter and claims adjuster for a personal lines insurance company where she trained new employees for these roles.

In her free time, she enjoys being with her family, being outdoors and running trails with her friends.

Kelly

PAC Trainer

Kelly joined Senior Home Care Solutions in 2019.  She has a master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology with 25 years experience in communication disorders.  Her passion comes from caring for her ailing mother who recently passed of Alzheimer’s Disease and Vascular Dementia.  She is a certified PAC trainer and a certified Consultant who trains healthcare professionals and consults with families. 

Kristie

Scheduling, Billing

Kristie is a mom of three girls. She started working with the elderly as a Beautician in a nursing home. She was also a part-time caregiver for her grandmother who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

In her spare time, Kristie loves baking, crafting, fishing and walking her dog.

Pat

Sales and Marketing

Pat, a native of New Jersey, taught school outside of Boston. After her husband was relocated to the Syracuse area, she began work for the Syracuse City Parks & Recreation Department. There, she developed all the cultural activities for city parks and for older adults living in the city high rises. She also developed a senior theater program, and programming and outreach for older adults in the towns of Clay and Manlius. She was involved in numerous professional organizations and has received awards for her work with older adults. Pat was one of the prime organizers of County, State and National senior games. Pat frequently visits her son's family outside of Charlotte, NC to see her two grandchildren. She loves the outdoors, hiking, gardening and visits to Henderson Harbor where she had a home on the lake for many years.

Shelby

Sales and Marketing

Shelby is responsible for handling our social media.

She just completed her Bachelors degree at Nazareth College and will be attending Law School at MSC in the fall.  She has a passion for seniors and enjoys research and social media. 

Amanda

Senior Companion

Amanda is currently going to school for nursing. As a teenager, she and her father would care for her great-aunt.

She has three dogs and a few other small animals at home. In her free time, Amanda enjoys hiking, crocheting, reading and photography.

Andrea

Senior Companion

Andrea also works as a security manager at the Everson Museum of Art. She is working on her master’s degree online. She has two teenage girls.

Andrea has two gentlemen with Down Syndrome who reside with her. They have been a part of her life for over ten years. She also has a household full of pets.

Andrea went to college for horse racing and training. She raced horses for a few years and then decided to switch careers.

Andrea M

Senior Companion

Andrea is originally from NYC and have been living in the Syracuse area for the past 25 years. She is a college graduate with an English degree, is an avid reader and loves The Theater and movies. 

Andrea recently retired from a position in a doctor's office she held for 24 years. She is an active grandmother of 8.

Angelica

Senior Companion

Angelica is a compassionate, understanding and kind person. She loves helping people and is a great listener and conversationalist.

She has two children and loves crafting (tumblers, ornaments, drawing and coloring), cooking and the outdoors.

Barb B

Senior Companion

I am a 60-year-old semi-retired woman, currently taking care of a friend's mother in her home.

I have a son, 31, who recently married the love of his life. I am truly blessed! I also have two fur babies - a Shih-Tzu dog named Sam and a cat name Emmie.

I am a Christian who attends an amazing church. I am a very happy person with a lot of love to give.

Barbara M

Senior Companion

I received my BS and MS degrees from Springfield College in Massachusetts while also working full-time. I am most proud of the fact that I put myself through school. I have worked in social services for over 30 years and enjoy helping people.

I love my dogs and my gardening. I also love working around the house, doing painting and sheet-rocking.

I am looking forward to a new chapter in my life with Senior Home Care & Alzheimer's Solutions.

Bethany

Senior Companion

Bethany has been married for over 25 years and is a mom to two adult children -- and is also a dog mom. She has been a stay-at-home mom for the past 20 years. She enjoys volunteering for the school district and for the organization Sleep In Heavenly Peace.

She is a college grad (Business) and has a background in sales and management.

Bethany enjoys hiking, skiing, cooking, puzzles, being outdoors and traveling. She embroiders tea towels of places she has visited. She enjoys being with family and friends. Some other hobbies include reading, kayaking and running.

Carmella

Senior Companion

Carmella enjoys spending time with her family, especially her grandson and cat. She loves helping people, listening to seniors and having them share their wisdom with her.

Cathy R

Senior Companion

Cathy was born and raised in Syracuse. She has five grandchildren and enjoys helping others.

Cindy

Senior Companion

Cindy has workin as a secretary, preschool teacher and, most recently, a home care provider.

She is a wife and mother of 3.  Cindy enjoys cooking, baking, reading and gardening. She gets much happiness from being of assistance to others.

Deb A

Senior Companion

Deb has cared for the elderly for many year and they become like family to her. She enjoys hearing about their life experiences.

Deb is originally from Syracuse.  She moved to Florida in 2014, and is now back "home." 

Deb has 2 children, 4 grandkids and 1 great-granddaughter. She enjoys doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and hanging out with the family.

Heather

Senior Companion

Heather is a certified Pharmacy technician. She has 5+ years of experience working with seniors with Dementia/Alzheimer's.

Heather enjoys spending her time with family and friends, and her dog Max, a Lhasa apso.

In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking, baking and crafts.

Ingrid

Senior Companion

Ingrid likes to travel and spend time outdoors, especially near water or in the garden.

She enjoys reading, photography, art, museums and knitting. She is a former dancer but now does yoga because it's more age-friendly.

Ingrid is a teacher, experienced workplace trainer and consultant. She went back to graduate school in her 50's and completed an Executive Masters in Public Administration. She loved studying with students, who are now her friends, from around the world.

Janet has worked with seniors for many years and writes blog articles of interest to seniors.

She enjoys photography, gardening, travel, and outdoor activities.

Janice

Senior Companion

Janice is a Central New York native and attended Syracuse University.

She worked as a healthcare administrator for several years, then started a small consulting firm that helps businesses grow.

In her spare time she enjoys her rescue dog, spending time with family and friends, reading, traveling, staying fit and gardening.

Jill

Senior Companion

Jill grew up in Central Square and graduated with a degree in Cabinet Making and Environmental Studies at SUNY Morrisville. She lived in Alaska for eleven years building eco-friendly cabins.

In her free time, Jill enjoys snowboarding, swimming and hiking.

Jody

Senior Companion

Jody is a veteran and served in the U.S. Army. She truly cares for people and loves to smile.

Jorja

Senior Companion

Jorja enjoys spending time with her grandmother helping her around the house and with errands. She also loves to cook, bake and garden.  She enjoys animals of all shapes and sizes.

 

Karen

Senior Companion

Karen has worked in the banking industry in the areas of customer service, training, trust services and management for over 25 years. She has spent 8 years as a dental receptionist working in offices in Syracuse, Richmond, KY and Queensbury, NY.

Karen has been married for 40+ years and she and her husband have raised two children together. She helped care for her mother who suffered from Alzheimer’s for over 10 years. She also helped care for other elderly relatives helping them with errands. Karen’s biggest enjoyment in life and in work is working with and being with people.  She also enjoys reading, traveling, walking and spending time with family.

Kay

As a child, my first friends were my grandparents and their friends. As a teenager, I volunteered at nursing homes, visiting elderly or disabled people.

I worked with families and seniors in a number of positions in  Syracuse and Indiana. My roles included: outreach worker/advocate, nutrition tech and hospice volunteer. Those experiences made me realize I should go back to school to become an L.P.N.

I worked in a dementia/alzheimers unit for a few years and then as a Home Health Aide/Nurse for 11 years. I took care of my parents in my home and retired last year. I'm reentering the job market working for this agency a second time. I am married and have three grandchildren. I enjoy walks, travel, reading, cooking and gardening, nature and music.

Kathleen

Kathleen is a semi-professional cook. She worked for many area restaurants in all different aspects of the business, including a lot of bartending and catering.

She had a stained glass business for 15 years and has recently gotten into it again.

Kathleen has been married for 26 years with no children.

She is a CHHA and has been working as an aide for six years.

 

Kermita

Kermita has been working with the elderly and with people with special needs for many years. She has two adult children and a dog named Nick. She loves motorcycle riding, snowmen and bears.

Kim recently graduated from nursing school. She has worked with seniors and those suffering from dementia for the past few years. She also takes care of her husband, who is a stroke survivor.

Kim enjoys going out for coffee and listening to live music.

I am a mom to three kids.

In my free time, I like to hike and take my dog for a walk.

Leah graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science in Hotel Restaurant Institutional Management and a minor in Business Administration.

She loves camping, boating, gardening, watching her sons play sports, classic cars, cooking and baking, crocheting and animals.

Lisa loves people and is a very caring person.

She has been married for 29 years and has three grandchildren.

In her free time, she loves to play bingo.

Lisa was born in Caracas, Venezuela and lived there for eight years and can speak spanish. Her parents served as missionaries there for thirteen years. 

She has two wonderful chidren and enjoys going to the beach, traveling and spending time with family. 

Lisa loves helping people and making a difference in their lives.

Lori is changing careers and is extremely excited to work with seniors. Formerly, she was an accountant for over 20 years. She graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration: Accountancy.

She is married and has two children.  She enjoys spending time with her husband and children.

She "loves, loves, loves" driving, loves dancing & eating, listening to historical mysteries and fiction, and camping with the family.

Lori says her favorite pastime is traveling.

I have been a caregiver for five years.

I have four children and a granddaughter, a dog and a cat.

I love to cook and bake for my family. I also love to garden.

Michelle

Michelle’s first experience with Alzheimer’s diesease was with her father. “It is a heartbreaking disease,” says Michelle. “I learned to be patient, understanding and not to argue.” Michelle volunteered at Syracuse Home for about a year.

Michelle has a bachelor’s degree from Kean University in New Jersey. She lives in Baldwinsville with her husband and Chinese Crested Powder Puff, Bogey. She enjoys golf, SU football, basketball and gardening.

Michelle is married (20 years) with two grown children and two fabulous grandkids, a boy and a girl.

She has lived in Syracuse all her life.

She recently worked at a senior retirement community for over two years and absolutely loved working with them!  She learned a lot and feels she can provide a loving, caring and understanding relationship with a senior and can actually learn a lot from them!

Patty was a respiratory therapist at the VA Medical Center before starting her family. She loved socializing with her patients and keeping them company.

Patty loves meeting people and making new friends, which helps her home-based business of networking and nutrition.

Originally from Michigan, she has nine siblings and two children of her own. Family is her priority and she enjoys reading, hiking and travel.

Regina

Regina is an experienced caregiver who enjoys working with people. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Loretto Nursing Home, where she worked with Alzheimer's and dementia clients.

She also has experience working with young adults in group home and home care, and clients with physical and intellectual disabilities.

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family. Her hobbies include making crafts, baking and Zumba classes.

Robin

Senior Companion

Robin is a Syracuse native. She has a love of music, food, and the outdoors. She also enjoys cooking, hiking, traveling, walking the dog and going to concerts.

Robin looks forward to enhancing the lives of others who cannot easily care for themselves.

Sharon is a native Syracusan with 4 children and her beloved cats, Benny and Chloe. She has a tender place in her heart for all animals.

Sharon has been caring for those with Dementia and Alzheimer's for 13 years and feels humbled by this opportunity.
